Procedural Masks for the General Public During COVID-19

Ever since the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic broke out globally, health experts have been urging people to self-isolate and maintain social distancing. People are slowly getting back into their daily routines, but the pandemic is nowhere near over. Keeping this in mind, it is more than important to follow the right health and safety protocols to keep yourself protected from the coronavirus.

As we know, the coronavirus can spread from person to person in close proximity. While we can’t always ensure being fully distant from each person in public, the best measure we can take is to protect ourselves by using the right gear.

Why you should invest in face masks

Most people are wearing face masks simply because the authorities have told them to do so. But why exactly are health officials all over emphasizing on the need to wear face masks?

The coronavirus or the Sars-CoV-2, is a deadly virus that is known for its fast transmission rate. When a person is infected with the virus, the cells in their body hosts the virus until it multiplies. Soon enough, the virus becomes suspended in the bodily fluids of their nose, mouth, and lungs. So, when an infected person coughs, they are sending showers of tiny droplets filled with the virus into the air. In fact, the person can also project these droplets even when they are simply speaking.

These tiny virus-filled particles can remain in the air and on surfaces for hours together, and during this time, several people can come into contact with the virus.

Depending on the ASTM Level of fluid resistance, by wearing a face mask, the person can protect themselves from these droplets, and avoid the risk of contracting the virus by simply being around an infected person.

But the biggest reason why face masks are recommended, researchers have found that about 6% to 18% of all people infected with the coronavirus has not shown any symptoms of being sick, which means that they are asymptomatic carriers of the virus. This is alarming because, even though a person seems healthy and normal, they could still be carrying the virus and infecting more people for up to 2 to 14 days. Some estimates suggest 80% of coronavirus cases may be mild or asymptomatic.  This finding makes it all the more important for every single person to wear a face mask, regardless of whether or not they are sick. Eventually, as more people venture outside, including the asymptomatic carriers of the virus, the rates of transmission can be lowered if every single person wears a face mask.  This helps to flatten the curve, especially as COVID-19 is anticipated to reemerge late Fall in combination with the Flu.

When should you wear a face mask?

Contrary to some general misinformation, it is important to wear a face mask every time you go outside, especially when you may be in a close proximity with others, and not just when you’re in a high-risk area. As you begin to get back into your daily routine, remember to wear a face mask when you’re going grocery shopping, walking in crowded streets, visiting other public places, or working in close proximity in shared spaces, and conversations extend past 10 minutes in close proximity.  While studies show air droplets can travel based on windy conditions with increased expellent from a jogger or someone sneezing can lengthen up to 26 feet, the recommended distance for social distancing is six (6) feet.

If you’re heading back to your workplace, you should aim to wear your face mask as much as possible, while also practicing social distancing from your co-workers especially when you are not directly at your desk. You must also remember to frequently wash your hands with soap and water, and use a hand sanitizer when hand washing is not accessible.

When are face masks not needed?

Face masks are generally recommended for public wearing, mostly because the chances of the virus spreading are higher in such instances. But, there are also a few places where you need not wear your face mask.

For starters, you need not wear your face mask when you’re at home or alone by yourself. You can also skip the face mask when you’re alone in your car. The most important factor to keep in mind is to use the face mask based on whether or not you have been sufficiently social distancing. If you feel like you may have put yourself at risk, practice caution for the next few days to come so as to avoid transmitting the virus to the people around you.

Face mask etiquette

Depending on whether you are using a disposable face mask or a reusable one, you need to keep a few things in mind when you decide to wear one.

  • Never touch your face mask without washing your hands before and after doing so.
  • Face masks can be uncomfortable, but you should avoid frequently touching it to adjust it.
  • Choose a mask that is snug but doesn’t make you feel short of breath.
  • The face mask should be secured with ear loops or ties.
  • Discard disposable face masks as and when you return home. Remember to wash your hands afterward.

Young children below the age of two, as well as people who have trouble breathing, must avoid wearing face masks. These people must opt to social distance completely.  A clear rain cover for the stroller or carrier, or baby wearing is a good option when bringing kids under two in public indoor locations such as the supermarket or when social distancing cannot be fully maintained.

Which mask should you buy?

The disposable protective face masks offered by CWI Medical are an excellent option for every person who is looking to buy face masks. Face masks are important because they are effective in safeguarding people from the coronavirus. When each person follows the right protective measures, along with social distancing, we can definitely curb the spread of the virus soon enough.
